High heels are destroying women's feet, causing permanent damage to a third of women, according to new research. Teetering around in several inches of heel not only hurts the feet, but causes accidents. More than a third of women have fallen while wearing them, the study found. The rise in popularity of such footwear has been encouraged by celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Victoria Beckham and Sarah Jessica Parker. One in 10 women now wear high heels three days a week, according to the study. The research, carried out by the American based shoe company MBT, examined 1,000 women and showed that the long term health of teenagers was particularly at risk with a growing number of under 18s wearing high heels before their bodies have fully developed. Current teenagers are 50 times more likely to have hip trouble than their mothers, while the number of girls suffering from back problems has also increased ten fold in the last generation, according to the study. Podiatrists have long criticised the high heel, warning women that they cause permanent damage. Common complaints from women who regularly wear them include heel pain and calluses. Such restrictive footwear can also cause bunions, ingrown toenails, nerve problems, stress fractures and "hammertoes" - a permanent bend in the middle joint of a toe. But the study concluded that flat pumps, popularised by model Kate Moss and singer Amy Winehouse, were equally problematic because they offer no support at all.

Now, it is best to qualify that statement somewhat - we are talking about heels with no platform. It’s all to do with how much your foot pivots (which is what happens when you wear heels). Don’t assume that 3.5 inch heels will add the same to your height because it’s unlikely they will unless you have a platform too).

Manolo Blahnik is one of the world's top women's shoes designers. Much like other top footwear designers (Christian Louboutin comes to mind), Manolo Blahnik considers himself, and is considered by many, to be an artist.

However, much like other top shoe designers, he completely ignores the fact that his creations are supposed to be worn by women as footwear, which means that - ideally - women should be able to walk in them without causing themselves long-term back and foot problems.

Now, not all of Manolo Blahnik's designs are bad. In fact, he offers quite a few shoes with flat heels or that are otherwise sensible. But his signature look remains those impossible, pointy-toed, skinny-and-high-heeled shoes that cause me to feel pain upon just looking at them.

The prices? Around $1000, which means that Kerry Bradshaw was right - if you own 10 pairs of $1000 shoes, that's about half a down payment on your very own place.

It's a matter of priorities, I guess.

I found THE shoe. It was like the sky opened up and shone a ray of sunlight on them (or whatever the blog equivalent is). They are exactly what I’m looking for, but I can’t have them.

Unfortunately Nordstrom’s was unable to find this shoe for me, so I became pretty jealous of this bride.

Suddenly I find myself searching for the next best thing to this shoe, and I could use some help! I love the fact that you can search by colour on Zappos and Nordstrom’s websites, but I have yet to find the right pair.

My shoe list of ‘musts’ include a green colour, mid heel height (ceremony on grass), not too strappy, and under $200. Also, they must go with my recently purchased lace dress. Oh ya BTW I ordered a dress! Huge deal.
